Shreveport Green is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a healthy, sustainable, and economically vital community through public outreach, community enhancement, and a specific respect for the natural and built environmental.
Shreveport Green strives to encourages citizens to take interest in and protect the city's beauty, water source, air quality, and urban forest. A healthy community is a crucial benefit to all citizens.
A clean city is a healthy city! Litter free streets and roadways add beauty and attract tourists. Shreveport citizens deserve to live in a beautiful, clean and healthy city. Well-kept, clean properties attract responsible and caring property owners and renters. Littered areas give the impression that people don't care. Once an area is heavily littered, it is perceived to be unsafe, undesirable, and it attracts more litter. To combat littering we make school presentations to k-12 students, civic groups, display signage, launch anti-litter campaigns, and conduct litter cleanups throughout the year.
Water is the new gold. Less litter or trash on city streets means less water pollution for storm drains. And this means less contamination for Cross Lake, which is the water source for Shreveport residents. Litter cleanups help to reduce the amount of waste entering the city's water streams. Each summer we conduct activities to raise awareness about water pollution and conservation. DON'T BLOW YARD CLIPPINGS INTO THE STREET - THIS LEADS TO CLOGGED STORM DRAINS AND WATER POLLUTION!
Trees are more than beautiful elements of the community. They provide numerous health benefits to us all: reduce air pollution, reduce noise, provide neighborhood privacy, slow wind speeds, reduce soil erosion, reduces energy costs, increase runoff of storm water (reducing flooding) and increase property values by 15%-30%. Studies have shown that communities with healthy trees experience less crime, reduces ADHD, reduces stress, encourages outdoor activities/exercise, and reduces pollutants that irritates asthma sufferers. Shreveport Green plants trees each year and provides education on the benefits of trees and proper tree planting and selection.
Shreveport Green works hard to engage young people in the quest for a clean and beautiful community. Children and youth are reached through schools, community centers, and faith-based institutions. They are taught, trained, and involved in community service projects to instill positive values towards their neighborhood, the city, and the environment.
