This video will identify the proper method for planting your tree. There are many tips and techniques that will ensure your tree will live a long and happy life. Some factors to consider when planting include: the depth and width of the hole, the size and depth of the tree's root ball, soil composition, etc... Remember, a carefully-thought out planting will greatly increase the lifespan and future health of your tree.

Shreveport Green's Planting Checklist:
  • Remove excess soil from top of ball if needed.
  • Root collar should be level up to 1"-2" above finished grade.
  • Break down sides of the hole when backfilling.
  • To backfill: Use existing soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. Tamp lightly the bottom two-thirds of fill, then continue filling. do not tamp the top layer.
  • Do not disturb soil under the ball, which supports root ball.
  • Branches: Low branches are temporary, but they help to promote strong trunks. Remove only dead or broken branches or double leaders at planting time,
  • Use 2"-4" of woody mulch: aged wood chips, shredded bark, or similar mulch. Keep mulch 6" back from trunk.
  • Cut and fold down burlap from upper half of ball. Remove all poly ties. Remove wire baskets or cut and fold down in the pit after positioned and backfillled halfway.
