Shreveport Green, in conjunction with the Northwest Council of Governments, has recently completed a CITYGreen analysis to determine Shreveport's level of tree canopy. CITYgreen is a powerful GIS application software that conducts complex statistical analyses of ecosystem services. Different areas that CITYgreen analyzes include: stormwater runoff, air quality, summer energy savings, carbon storage and avoidance, and tree growth.
Although the final reports are not in yet, preliminary data suggests that several of our older neighborhoods such as Martin Luther King, Allendale, and Queensborough are sorely lacking in canopy cover. While an optimum canopy cover is rated 35%, these older neighborhoods scored only a 8-10%. Recent activities such as droughts, ice storms, and tornados and high winds have decimated the older tree populations in these neighborhoods.
