Litter Index Survey

The Litter Index Survey is a tool developed by Keep America Beautiful to help its 400+ affiliates determine the litter situation in their communities. Each spring we conduct the Litter Index Survey to measure how clean 119 square miles of Shreveport is. This includes a visual assessment of the presence of litter per zip codes: 71101, 71103, 71104, 71106, 71107, 71108, and 71109. This tool enables us to determine the types of litter prevention strategies needed and it shows us exactly where litter problems occur.

According to studies conducted by Keep America Beautiful and the American Public Works Association, there are SEVEN SOURCES OF LITTER:

  • Motorists(also includes boaters)
  • Pedestrians
  • Households(open/improperly covered refuse containers)
  • Hauling(uncovered loads)
  • Loading Docks
  • Commercial Refuse Storage Areas (dumpsters)
  • Construction/Demolition Sites

Keep America Beautiful teaches the following approaches to community change:

  • Education - in schools and communities
  • Technology - equipment to measure and manage waste
  • Ordinances - laws which impact solid waste and litter management
  • Enforcement - consistent, effective law and ordinance enforcement
