Shreveport Green has joined forces with the city and the parish to eliminate litter in our city! In a press conference Mayor Keith Hightower explained the three-prong approach to solving this local problem. Education, Enforcement, and Community Clean Ups are the driving force behind this campaign. To help spread the message there are radio and television public service announcements to remind Shreveporters to keep their city clean.
The police department has also promised a crackdown on enforcing litter laws. The maximum penalty for littering could bring a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail! The city has now moved three employees into a full time litter abatement crew. However, this is not a problem that the city alone needs to take care of. The presence of litter affects each member of the city, and therefore is the responsibility of everyone. When litter builds up in neighborhoods, it generally leads to an increase in crime. When tourists see a dirty city and don't return, that gives Shreveport a bad impression, and businesses within the city lose money. That is why it is in everybody's best interests to clean up Shreveport!
