During this annual collection drive, trees are sent to South Louisiana to prevent wetland erosion. This project serves two purposes: it prevents the trees from taking up space in the landfill, and acts as an important step in helping rebuild our disappearing coastline. After the extensive damage done by Hurricane Katrina, this program has tripled in importance! With 100 square miles of marshland transformed into open water, we hope to turn these trees into a coastal marshland foundation. The donated trees will be trucked to Lafourche, Terrebonne, and St. Bernard parishes and will create a "hurricane fence". These submerged trees create a barrier island that traps sediment in the area, building up the land base and hindering erosion. Once established, volunteers groups such as ShrevCORPS will plant different types of marsh grass.
