Litter Reduction Checklist

REFUSE COLLECTION AND PICK-UP AREAS

  • Are all containers and receptacles covered?
  • Is the container/receptacle capacity adequate?
  • Is the collection frequent enough?
  • Are end-of-day clean-ups conducted?
  • Are excess materials securely tied?

LOADING AND UNLOADING PLATFORMS AND DOCK AREAS

  • Are litter receptacles light enough to be moved as needed, and emptied as necessary?
  • Are receptacles covered to prevent spillage?
  • Are end-of-day clean-ups conducted?
  • Are excess materials securely tied?

PARKING LOTS, SIDEWALKS AND DRIVEWAYS, RIGHTS-OF-WAY

  • Are litter receptacles placed where needed?
  • Are receptacles situated at entrance and exits to buildings and grounds?
  • Are parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways cleaned and swept regularly?
  • Are receptacles situated throughout the parking lot?
  • Is the right-of-way cleaned when needed?

GRASS BORDERS AND STRIPS, FENCE AND WALL BASES, AND PLANTED AREAS

  • Are these areas cleared of accumulated litter on a regular basis?
  • Is the litter clean-up equipment adequate for collecting litter at these sites?
  • Are green areas regularly groomed-mowed, edged, and trimmed?

INTERIOR OFFICE AREAS

  • Are there enough litter receptacles for each working area?
  • Is the design of litter receptacles the most suitable for each area?
  • Have employees been encouraged to use the receptacles, and to clean up litter as soon as it has been generated?
  • Are the receptacles movable to sites which are more likely to be littered on a temporary basis?
  • Are the receptacles emptied when needed, and on a regular basis?

INTERIOR NON-WORKING AREAS (BREAK ROOM, LUNCH ROOM, HALLWAYS, ETC.)

  • Are the litter receptacles suited to their location and use?
  • Are the receptacles placed in sites that are prone to heavy litter accumulation?
  • Are receptacles emptied regularly?
  • Have employees been urged to use the receptacles?
  • Are reminders not to litter posted in these areas?

EMPLOYEE EDUCATION

  • Are employees aware of Shreveport Green, its objectives and purposes?
  • Have employees been encouraged to involve their families and friends in Shreveport Green projects?
  • Do employee publications and/or assembly areas display reminders not to litter?
  • Do all business vehicles have litterbags?

COMPANY VEHICLES

  • Are company trucks carrying loose materials covered to prevent spillage?
  • Are company cars and trucks equipped with litter bags?
