Shreveport Green is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the city's environment and enhancing its economy through public education and community beautification, litter abatement, and recycling projects.
Shreveport Green was established in March, 1990, as a project of the Clean Community Commission and the Shreveport Beautification Foundation. This was the result of some concerned and determined volunteers interested in improving the visual image of Shreveport. Led by the Shreveport Medical Society, the two organizations approached the City of Shreveport for funding to hire a fulltime Executive Director to lead the efforts.
The match of the two non-profit organizations was perfect because both were involved on improving the environment. The Clean Community Commision dealt mainly with litter and recycling issues and had been a Keep America Beautiful affiliate since 1981. The Shreveport Beautification Foundation had been facilitating beautification projects since 1937. The success of the partnership was so successful that in 1992, they joined missions and Shreveport Green took on the mantle of a full fledged organization. Shreveport Green now has the responsibility for initiating projects, facilitating programs, and fundraising.
The rest is well-documented! Shreveport Green became an active affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and used their "blueprint" for establishing programs and gaining credibility in the community. City, Parish, and Private support has been steady - both financially and in providing services. Our mission remains to improve the aesthetics of the community through litter abatement, beautification, and recycling.
